I created this rare and terrible beast for Circus Minimus this year. Rotating googily eyes and a chomping mouth, made from nothing but cardbaord scavenged from a local furniture outlet, some cheap tempera paint, and a couple streamers. Fear for your lives!

I did a gig in the the mall, painting stuff on people's shoes in a department store. It was kind of like face painting, except instead of a washable cheek, the surface was something they had just dropped forty bucks on, and the result was permanent. Tricky!

While I waited for the thing to start, I drew folks. I love moving targets.

Crazy Bear was born to Rory and Stu in the back of Andy's
car, while we were on our Roadtrip to the Future.

He has since multiplied and evolved at an alarming rate. He
is an indestructible beast. The worse you draw him, the scarier
he is. The better you draw him, the more awesome he is. It's a
win-win.

Crazy Bear lives in our sketchbooks and on the streets. He lives in
cardboard fouton box caves illuminated by blinking red LEDs, and
on the walls of prestigious galleries. He is omnipresent and vicious.
He is very ticklish, not to mention woogley.

a blustery day when I was pacing the sidewalk,
looking for a lost button.

That was a couple weeks ago--now there's snow

Very Different Things

Here are some signs I made at work. I just started
as a graphic artist as a company that does event planning--
scenery, lighting, props, etc. I got these printed at 2' x3'.
They're travel posters, themed decorations for a big cruise
themed party in D.C. Not my usual thing, definitely some
vector palm trees stolen from google images. I'm not proud
of that sort of behavior, but sometimes in this line of work
you have to move as quick as you can. I don't consider it
illustration. Or graphic design, really. "Graphic art?"
However, it's nice to have a job where I can use some of
my skills and knowledge.

And here's another present painting.

I was at the VMFA again for a little while on sunday, looking at the paintings in the Indian art section. They're all done with ink and opaque watercolor, and mostly dated around the late 1700s. So, small inky/watercolory/gouachey paintings. Theyre probably some of the closest peices in the museum to the kind of art that I make, at least technique-wise. Sorry the pictures
are so bad, I wish the lighting was a little brighter in the gallery.

I like the simple way these artists painted the plants in the pictures, and I was trying to learn/steal their methods.

Back home, I tried to replicate some of the
plants I liked. Some worked out better than
others--I chalk that up to bad gouache that
isn't very opaque, and my own impatience.
You really have to let that stuff dry.

I really like figure drawing at TAD. There's a certain
amount of pressure when one is in a room full of
awesome art, pretty intense students, and Sterling
Hundley is pacing around behind you.

Right now, the SunTrust Richmond Marathon is going on.
There is a steady stream of people running by my house.

People are hanging out along the sidewalks too, cheering
for their favorite runners. It's nice.
