Flora

I was at the VMFA again for a little while on sunday, looking at the paintings in the Indian art section. They're all done with ink and opaque watercolor, and mostly dated around the late 1700s. So, small inky/watercolory/gouachey paintings. Theyre probably some of the closest peices in the museum to the kind of art that I make, at least technique-wise. Sorry the pictures
are so bad, I wish the lighting was a little brighter in the gallery.

I like the simple way these artists painted the plants in the pictures, and I was trying to learn/steal their methods.

Back home, I tried to replicate some of the
plants I liked. Some worked out better than
others--I chalk that up to bad gouache that
isn't very opaque, and my own impatience.
You really have to let that stuff dry.

Sketchdump 11/26

I haven't posted much from the latest sketchbook,
so here you go! Gotta keep my pen moving.

Figure, 11/11

I really like figure drawing at TAD. There's a certain
amount of pressure when one is in a room full of
awesome art, pretty intense students, and Sterling
Hundley is pacing around behind you.

Marathon

Right now, the SunTrust Richmond Marathon is going on.
There is a steady stream of people running by my house.

People are hanging out along the sidewalks too, cheering
for their favorite runners. It's nice.

Amphitheatre

Same as yesterday--took my mini-sketchbook on
a run, found a cool spot, made some notes. Then later
I painted the scene as best I could remember.

And yeah, I like spelling it "theatre."

Boat Lake

Yesterday I went for a run, and I took a very tiny
sketchbook and a pencil with me. On my way back
I stopped to do a sketch, and later made a painting
based on it, but mostly on my memory. It's a tricky
exercise to work from memory--for this one I felt
like I was mostly making things up. I'll keep trying
this, though.

Figure Drawing

Better than last week, I'd say.

Museum Sketching

A mashup of sketches from the museum today.
Some decorative stuff from furniture, pre-colombian
figurines, native american, and south asian art.
I still can't believe admission to this place is free.

Suave Guy

Practice painting. I was exploring our attic, and I found
a few interesting bits of paper--one was some sort of trading
card, with a picture of this guy on it. It's all faded and beat
up, has a 1966 copyright on the back, but I can't figure out
what the card is for.
