Decisions, Decisions

Or do we just do what we were always
going to do, anyway?

Changing of the Backpack Guard

If you have seen me any time
in the past four years, you've
probably seen me with my
little red drawstring backpack
with lizard creatures painted
on it.

This bag and I have had many great
adventures together, and it faithfully
carried some of my most important
possesions throughout my college years.
But now, it has worn thin and is so full
of holes that it must finally retire.
Goodbye, red backpack!

Happily, I have acquired a nice new
bag already. I painted an eyeball on
the back, perhaps to ward off predators
in the same manner that moths and
butterflies do.

The Wild Riders

New piece for my hypothetical show in August.
Still need to lock that down.

Ink, watercolor.

Fun stuff from work.

Some penguins I whipped up for signs that
I will eventually make for the Zoo. African
Black Footed Penguins, or Jackass Penguuins
(due to the loud braying sound they make),
to be exact. Not nearly as cute as the otters

And here's a graphic I made for a t-shirt,
commissioned by some kind of drinking
team known as Chest Bump. Really fun!
Unfortunately I can't take all the credit for
this one--brilliant idea and original sketch
(on the left) are by Luke.

IB22, Sounds like a Submarine

Vidya and I are throwing birthday party
this sunday, you should come!

I am working on a painting, and it just came out
of the infamous "ugly stage"--but I'm not going
to show you just yet :).

It has been too long since I've practiced, clearly.
Fun to break out the calligraphy stuff, though.
I did a terrible job of lining the paper, but then,
the light in my room is so dim that I could barely
see the lines away.

I hope Grandma doesn't look at my blog before
this arrives in the mail!

An Awful Fight

I was killing time drawing at the mall yesterday,
and I saw this awful couple having an awful fight.

La pauvre petite fille.

A little bit better, eh?
Still kind of ambivalent
about this one though.

15 Minute Self Portrait

Pen, whiteout, watercolor, bathroom mirror.

Something Compels

Some frustrating painting today. Working
on an piece based on a thumbnail for a class
assignment that I never used:

This is a terrible photograph,
but right now it's also a terrible
painting. Chances are, it's a fine
foundation and I can resuce it.
But at the moment I'm just not
diggin' it.

I often forget that art almost
never goes well for me on the
first try. I ussually start over
two or three times, and each try
is a little better. So I guess
I can't expect things to come
out perfectly right away.
Just gotta enjoy the struggle.

7/9 Finns

Practice. ~ 20 mins each give or take. Seems
kind of slow, but the last guy was quicker and better.
I have to get warmed up for these sorts of things.

Oh, they're from my book that has photos of
Finnish (I think?) people from the 1800's,
always a good scource of guys with crazy facial hair.

Beantown Sketchbook and Pictures I Drew at Work

Here are a few of the cooler things
I've done at work so far:

This was the front of a t-shirt for
a demolition derby team. This isn't
the final design, maybe midway--
it turned silver, got a lot busier,
more skulls on the back of the shirt.
Plus the skulls got mohawks. Fun stuff!
I only drew the skull, the rest is
crappy stock vector shapes, etc.

I am designing some signs for our local
menagerie's, the Ross Park Zoo (one of
the oldest in Ameirca I believe?). They're
for the penguin and otter exhibits.

I started out by painting 5-6 penguins in
a realistic style... but that was taking too long,
and I eventually realized that the sign was
supposed to contain fun facts for kids, and
get positioned at a 6-year-old sort of eye level.
So I switched to these cute cartoony otters.
I'm going to back and make some simpler
vector penguins, too.

In other news, I journeyed to Boston this weekend
to see some of my friends. It was a marvelous trip,
and I wish you all could have been there too!

Here are some sketches (and mostly notes I guess)
from the road.
