Coffee and a Mystic Circle

I was drawing in a public place again yesterday.
This fellow texting on the couch caught on that
I was drawing him, but he was a good sport and
didn't budge. When he got up to leave, he came
over to take a look, and took a cell phone picture
of the page. It didn't have the crazy circle on it yet.

Last Pages

Dear Blog Readers, oh my goodness! How could I have
neglected to inform you that I finished another sketchbook?
This happened two or three weeks ago. Since each sketchbook
is one way of marking another segment of my life (vastly
variable in length and significance), the last few pages
are a place for reflection.

Volcano Farmer

More experiments.

The right page has a mini-book pasted onto it.

I used some acrylic gloss medium mixed with
watercolor for some of this--that's kind of interesting,
good for glazing. And a nice smooth texture.

Growth

Here's my process for a new piece for my
Digital Mixed Media class. The thumbnail,
then a false start, and then a re-start with
an approach that was more natural for me.

I always want to try new things, and do everything.
I like trying things and starting over.

And here's the final.

Wava Jollie's

Wava's is always a good place to draw.
I like coffee shops in general--people
sit still, make funny faces, and don't notice
you staring at them. Also,

In the coffee shop,
Laptops pop up
like little silver mushrooms
in the dawn grass
after a soft night
of summer rain.

Your Sketchbook Fix

Latest spread from one of my latest sketchbooks.

Sorry for my absence, avid blog readers--my computer
was struck low by a pernicious virus. But now everything
is okay, and I can once more keep you posted on
the pictures I've been making and the fascinatingly
intimate details of my personal life. At your service.

It's Hard to Paint in a Tree

Stu and Jo and I spent a pleasant hour or two
in the biggest, gnarliest tree at Genesee valley
park. It's hard to paint in a tree--especially balancing
a glass jar of water on a branch, trying not to drop
pencils and brushes and paints and such. A little
precarious, even though that tree is incredibly
easy to climb and sit in.

Jo took these sweet photos. It was a beautiful day.

Sketches from the Open Road

Our road trip was great. Out of the four cities
we visited, we liked Baltimore and Richmond the best.
It's also amazing how far one can get relying on
the kindness of almost-strangers. Thanks to everyone
who let us crash at their place!

I'm of the opinion that not everything I do
has to be good. But I like to keep my hand and eyes
moving, so I try to keep drawing all the time
Here is stuff from my sketchbook that I did
while we were on the trip.

Flowers

This is a small picture book I was working on last quarter. I have just finished compiling it, and I hope you'll enjoy.
